Arabian Nights

In February I read the Stories from the
Arabian Nights.
These are my bedtime stories.

This 1933 edition is filled with wonderful illustrations
and is in large print.

Only a few of the stories are in this book.
I have another edition with more of the stories.
Someday I will buy the complete 1001 Nights.

I've not read this book before. The illustrations alone would make we want to page through the book.

P.S. Those parrots really can get into trouble without even trying. ;)

Dear Lisa,
The only story I knew from the collection was Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves. I find the stories so interesting and a fun way to learn about Abrab culture. The fairy tales, poetry and spirituality of a culture interest me. As does the dress and climate. I like to know about the landscape, the natural history and the interpretive history. I like to eat the foods and drink the beverages. I like to know about the flora and fauna.I like to listen to the music. Each year I learn a bit more about the different cultures we study. Someday I hope I get to visit.
I am still reading The Pillow Book!
I read a bit and think a bit. I do that with all the boooks I have going. A little bit here and there. Once in awhile I will find a novel and read cover to cover.
LOL! Parrots can also get US into trouble. It would be grand to see one in the wild.

These illustrations are marvelous. I haven't read this book either. My son's favorite Disney movie was Aladdin. I smile at that.

Currently, I am reading the third in the series of "The Golden Compass."

Resting, and reading, resting and reading. Winter is wonderful that way, for me.

Lovingly,

Sherry, I am reading _Snow Flower and the SEcret Fan_. You talk about some strange old customs. Binding feet is one reason why I am most grateful I wasn't chinese and living in that century.

Dear Sprite,
I think of these tales the same way I think of western fairy tales, part of our culture. Knowing the references helps to understand why we are the way we are.
Disney did open the door for more investigation into the Arab world. I was thinking about getting Aladdin from Netflix. I would love to watch a few movies in February that go with my theme. I have seen "Gandi" a few times.
I wrote "Golden Compass" down. Are you enjoying it?
These cold winter days are perfect for reading and watching movies and resting. Once spring comes we will want to be outside!
Stay cozy. Big snow coming tonight and tomorrow.
Love,
Sherry

Dear Lisa,
Feet binding does sound terrible!
Yikes!
I have a very good list of books to look for when we go to the used book shop. Hope "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan" is there.
I do enjoy historical novels.
I have a Mockingbird waiting for me to bring out the raisins. I could write a book about Mockingbirds!

I wish my Mocker would eat raisins. He just goes for the berries. I wanted to try to get his picture eating pyracantha berries but the angle and screen won't allow a good picture. It doesn't even allow a bad picture. Very frustrating.

Years ago a neighbor trained a mocker to eat raisins. I started leave three out for it every day. It would stand on the planter where he could look inside the house and scold if I didn't put them out at the proper time. Such fun.

Dear Lisa,
Mr. Mocker does come and get me if his raisins are not out! I put lots out since the Cardinals also eat them.
This is the first winter I have ever seen Cardinals on the suet! I put extra suet cakes out once I saw the Cardinals trying to get some. I hung the suet in such a way the Cardinals can perch on a branch and nibble. Anything to make their lives a bit easier.
I also put dried cherries out. The Mockingbird loves them!
I am researching the pyracatha bush. If it is native to my area I want to plant one. I think Mockingbird would like it. I left all the poke-weed last summer and the birds loved the berries! Mockingbird was very protective of the poke.
